Animals and Prizes 3
Title: Animals and Prizes (3/?)
Author: Alsike
Fandom: Victorious
Pairing: Jade West/Tori Vega
Rating: PG-13 (15? Mention of knotting, but nothing explicit)
Summary: Tori Vega is starting an exciting new school, Hollywood Arts, but she has a secret. She's a female alpha, naturally dominant and aggressive. If anyone finds out, her life will hardly be worth living. In addition, Alphas sense when an omega goes into heat, but that doesn't mean she wants an omega - especially not a girl omega. Biology isn't destiny, right? Jori
Warnings: This is a Knotting world - because knotting is hilarious and kind of gross - so be prepared. BUT PG-13 (for now) And... maybe a touch of gender politics.

Yay to Tori kicking ass to defend the ladies!
Was it just that one kiss or did Cat and Tori make out?

I'm going to say it was just one kiss - but it was very enthusiastic.
Thanks for commenting! (And why are people on FFN such jerks? I am appreciating awesome LJ people - like you - much more now.)

So, this is very interesting. I know nothing of the show, and frankly, without the whole alpha/omgea issues it seems kind of boring. But when you put that stuff in, and add Jori... well, it turns out brilliant.
I ahve to say I still think the world is pretty boring, though. The sections without Jori or when they're talking about gender and alpha/omega issues kind of bore me, like filler material because the world cannot solely revolve around Jori and those issues.
Anyway, when you do hit those issues, you hit them spot on. I loved all the stuff about omegas, betas and alphas, thought I'm not sure I understand yet why the stereotypes are what they are and why female alphas are so despised. You write that's it's an invitation to gang-rape, and that really makes me wonder about all this. I mean, we saw in Tori's report that the world seems rather normal now. But then there are all the implications of Alphas being able to rape omegas at will and come out innocent, and alphas practically owning omegas, and so forth. It's all very confusing - would you mind explaining a bit more? I like how you've handled it so far, I just don't understand the issues at hand because, well, I don't understand the culture. And the whole 'knotting' thing - what does that even mean? Is it like finding your optimal mate? Does it entail a physical reaction of actual knotting? Does that mean all female alphas have dicks? I'm very confused.
In any case, though, obviously the main focus is on the relationship, and I love how amazingly you write it, with Tori so clueless and despite being the Alpha, not acting like it at all, and Jade being the omega but acting a lot more like the alpha. It;s the kind of interaction and relationship I love to see you write, where there is a constant power exchange and it is unequal, and the relationship will only become stable if it equals. I really enjoy it, especially Tori's confusion and Jade's anger and determination. I hope to see more of it soon.

I do have a taste for very peculiar television shows. And really, the show runs on humor - a very stagey improv kind of humor - which is really hard to recreate in words. One cannot say there is depth or complexity to the characters and world. :) It's tough to write because it's so.... not epic.
I'm hoping the world will eventually become clear, but the more I think about it, the more complex it seems to get. Essentially they exist at a time where omegas are no longer supposed to be used as chattel, but the mindset and the biological imperative mean that it doesn't always work like that. I have a LOT more to say, but most of it is actually going in the fic, so you'll have to wait.
Female alphas are externally physically identical to beta females, so a lot of people assume that they don't actually exist. Anyone who claims to be a female alpha is assumed to be lying, and to test it there will probably be a fight.
Male alphas have knots - in the canine sense. They believe that this makes them special.
I'm glad the relationship is coming across well! It is all about the power dynamic and the struggle, and hopefully it will work out. I'm really glad you're reading!

Oh, so there's biological imperative as well. Well, if omegas go into heat, I can see where that would reduce their value in the eyes of society. It's just so odd, you know? That Jade is the exception to the rule, that most omegas accept their nature and just go along with it. Of course, one could say it's the same for Tori, but it's not. Because if Tori accepts her true nature, her situation could be worse, since most don't believe in it. I really want to see more of this, so it's good to know it'll be in the fic.
So wait. Can Female Alphas impregnate Omegas? Or is it only males who have the ability to impregnate in this world? Since both genders can get pregnant based on their position, I'd have thought there'd be some kind of consistency to it...
The relationship is really the best part of the fic. I'm actually surprised at Tori's parents for not correcting her mistake, but I suppose they're respecting Jade's choice. It's just odd - Tori is nice, as Jade noted, and very much does not act like an Alpha. If they had told her the truth, she probably would have gone to Jade and swear never to mate with her unless it was what Jade wanted. They managed to form a truce anyway, but it remains a question. Of course, there's also the question of why Jade doesn't see that Tori is modern, and if they did mate, she wouldn't be the inferior in the relationship. Indeed, she could be the superior. I want to hear more of their thoughts on this.
Lastly, forgive me if I am being annoying, but are there plans for any other fic sometime soon?

Jade isn't an exception really. Her situation is slightly different from other omegas. But there's a reason that there's an omega rights movement at all. More will be explained.
Oh no, it's consistent. Examine the comments above. It may not be relevant to this story, but it is all sorted out.
Tori's parents are really 'hands off' style parents. It makes sense to them currently, though they may regret it in the future.
Oh man, other fic? My plans for winter break are to rewrite novel 1, finish novel 2, write A-paper 1, outline A-paper 2, so I'm going to say no. This one came as much a surprise to me as anyone, and if I hadn't had two days of student meetings with nothing to do in the interim periods I would probably have never written this one either. Check back next semester. And yet, as is clear, one really never knows.

I don't know about Tori's parents. They have a point. Especially as the main problem is Jade's attitude, and the next problem is that Tori herself needs to become more of an Alpha, more of an equal. They definitely can't fix the first, and they can only tell Tori she should change. But it'll be far more powerful and better if she does it herself, so... yeah. I think their main fault is in not supplying proper context and information for the girls.
Ah, I though so. Well, best of luck with those... and I shall remain patient and hoping.

I actually liked reading a bit more about the gender politics involved in this world. It's necessary for readers to understand what type of setting the characters are immersed in, and the audience can probably comprehend why the characters act the way they do even though said audience won't always agree with their actions. A different world equals different sets of rule though, and I think you carry off that point rather well.
So... Wayward Tori goes to the party against Jade's advice. Lol. I wonder how the latter will feel about that once she finds out. XD I'm sure it'll be all over school come the following Monday. Tori basically revealed her Alpha status the moment she stepped in to help those two betas (even though I'm still not entirely certain who they are, but I think I could just be a bit slow on the uptake, thanks to all the studying I did over the weekend. Bleh. And I still have one more final to look forward to.).
Doug seemed rather impressed with her feat though, or it could just be that he's holding off on doing anything against her while he roughs up his Alpha buddies for being so easily taken down by a female Alpha (but that's just me being my overly-pessimistic self though). I kinda want Doug to be okay with Tori's status as a means for the other male Alphas to back off on harassing her once word gets out about her, but I have a feeling that won't be as easy as it seems.
Loved the chapter! Can't wait to see Jade again or how she'll react to Cat having kissed Tori.
