As for plot, well, just Emily's journey as she grows up can be enough if you write it well enough (which you will). I think a main thread could be her education, and Lady Adler grooming her into an .
Which does not exclude inheritance ruses or forced marriages, but maybe you shouldn't give it too heavy a Dickens feel, just because you have shit happen to Emily in most of your stories and it might be interesting for some variety. After all, the situation's bad enough what with being orphaned and feeling isolated - no need for gratuitous angst. I think the inheritance ruse would fit in - especially in the Prentiss circle - but I just think that you could make this fantastically intriguing without raining misery down on the poor girl.
