Thank you! It's nice to know people from the CM community are reading this (due to my penchant for JJ bashing, [seriously though, Emily deserves better than being abandoned for crawfish and progeny]).
As for X-Men continuity, aside from two or three inside jokes which are probably not very funny, all that i've really used so far is the destruction of Genosha. I'll make slight mention of Emma's family life, particularly her brother Christian (gay, drug-addicted, insane), and I have more stuff planned with M-Day and the Hellfire Club making a reappearance, but knowing about the backstory is not that important. The reason X-Men is the greatest fandom in existence is that so many plot lines have been retconned and so many characters have been resurrected or have variant backstories that you can pretty much do whatever you like regardless of canon, (which canon?). in fact, the more you know, the more confused you will be. I actually really like the first movie, because it boils everything down into a handy-dandy parallel of the civil-rights movement. But Emma is not in it. :(
All you really need to know is that Emma is a selfish, manipulative, bitch-on-wheels, but not for no reason.
