My Year in Fanfic Meme, 2012
I wasn’t really thinking I would do this, since I was pretty sure I wouldn’t have even visited my LJ in months. And then, well, Jori happened.
But the best thing in fic this year was being invited to speak at panels at FemslashCon. It was so much fun, (though computer f*ups of annoyance!) and there were so many ideas floating around. Of course, then I didn’t write any of them. (Well, that’s not entirely true. I have a few pages of one. But then I decided I hated it and couldn’t figure out how to finish it. I need to figure out a few character motivations and then I might be able to pull it off. Expensive DC call girls, please!)

01. Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
Well, since I thought I wrote nothing this year, and was pretty sure that I was on a downward trend, the fact that I wrote as much as I did is kind of a shock.
02. What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January?
J Victorious. I thought I was done with fic. But these Nick shows kept pulling it back out of me. (And I wrote filthy porn for iCarly… I am a horrible person.)
03. What's your own favorite story of the year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest?
I think I’m going to have to say Jill the Vampire Slayer – if only because the concept is nuts.
In actual fact it is an Emma/Emily fic, just, you know, one where Emily is the Doctor and Emma was her companion for a while before an encounter with some demon/alien possession shit got her knocked up, and totally pissed her off. Emma goes off to run Wolfram and Hart, and Emily keeps an absentminded eye on their part-demon kid, who can’t help but draw horrible supernatural things toward her. Jill, after her stint as a gutter-punk/hunter with Jen (from Baby Girl) and devirginizing Cindy in the back of a truck, takes off when a demon kills Cindy’s dad. Cindy becomes a hunter, looking for the demon. Jill joins Wolfram and Hart for a while, then leaves when she figures out what their game is. (Possibly hogtieing Emma and pushing her through a door to another dimension where Emily can pick her up and rehab her.) Then Jill runs into Cindy over the body of a Black Dog and they ride around in a truck and shoot things together.
The End. J
04. Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
I printed out a chapter of a fic and edited it on paper. I learned that editing makes things better! Even fic.
And, um, writing a knotting fic? Though there hasn’t been any knotting yet! Something is deeply wrong!
What did I learn from writing knotting fic? That I’m a terrible person.
05. Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the New Year?
As always I struggle mightily for the difficult to attain. But I will get my damn princesses book in shape to query this year, and I will finish the draft of my epic uber Emma-Emily fic which is masquerading as an original novel. Well, actually it is an original novel, I’m just trying to see if I can infuse some of the romance and crazy character dynamics into my original writing. (It is also currently about 120k, and not yet finished. L )
And I want to finish CotR this year. It’s time. I love it, but I’m not having another story linger for 10 years. Seriously.
06. From my past year of writing, what was...
My Best Story: I really loved my timestamps this year. I can’t say they were best or worse, because they were timestamps. But the Vegas timestamps and the Back Before we were Brittle sequel were awesome
Story Most Underappreciated by the Universe: Jill the Vampire Slayer. Not that it was necessarily deserving of appreciation, but whenever I do my nutso WMC crossovers no one reads them. L Or if they’re read, people just find them boring. Which is valid. Still. I like it.
Story Most Surprisingly appreciated by the Universe: Animals and Prizes! Writing for an active fandom is SO CRAZY. It’s not as rewarding as building your own fandom, but the glut of commentary is kind of thrilling. Luckily though I still have real readers who leave me awesome comments on LJ. Those are the most satisfying.
Most Fun: Animals and Prizes – because I didn’t have to force it. Finally, it felt good to write fir again.
Most Disappointing: God, too many of those. I kind of half assed the end of Demons, and there was some other suckinesses out there.
Most Sexy: Well, that would have to be The Beef Jerky Incident. OMG. The worst part about it is that when I wrote it I just figured that it made a lot of sense. It would be totally canon to the show. It was only after I posted it that I realized it was possibly the most disgustingly hilarious thing I had ever written. But come on. Sam? Hilariously disgusting is so in character for her.
Hardest to Write: The Beginning. Essentially, I had to kill off all my characters, which was brutal and made me upset. But I did it!
Most Unintentionally Telling: The Beef Jerky Incident. See above. I am the worst.
So, what do you think?
