I had always seen her as a little bit of a child, but this was a tantrum that had left a man dead and others irreparably scarred, both mentally and physically.
So I just came back from watching the film Orphan less than twenty flipping minutes ago. Any references to children (yes, I know I'm technically one >_>) now automatically make me think "evil EVIL little fuck".
So after Pain and Fear I was, like you, into the hotness of Emily bleeding, but also hoping you wouldn't take her into woobie territory - a land I despise. And you didn't! Instead you, dear jesus, got Emma to unleash several degrees of hell upon everyone. How's that for attachment? And even her reasoning on why she chose Emily makes sense, although the one thing I'm curious about is why Emily's shields are stronger than everyone else's.
I suppose it depends on how much of the CM backstory you've gone with, but even without the horrific childhood, I'd imagine that Aaron [for example] would be pretty good at shutting his mind off too. I'm really surprised by Emily's shields being that strong - it makes sense in the alternate reality, given how she's always compartmentalized the horrors she's seen, but here I don't see it. Surely the other slaves have had similar experiences of the Christmas Revolution to her? Though it still depends on the individual I guess. I don't know, it just interests me that Emily seems to be the only person there out of all those slaves that Emma can't get a read on.
Unless you mean that Emma can't get a surface read on her, but can still get into Emily's mind with force. That would make sense, I suppose, though I'd still expect there to be others with shields as strong.
That aside, you're really developing an interesting and believable relationship between Emma and Emily. Emma's anger at Emily's perceived rejection of her is so real and true of Emma, and I like seeing that Emily begin to question Emma. And I'm sorry to use such underwhelming adjectives, but I just want to be specific when explaining why this story is so awesome.
Also: I know it's an Emma/Emily fic, but I'm really interested to know if Aaron and Emily ever speak to each other again. And if you've taken up that Garcia Schindler idea. In conclusion: you rock. Please write more, though not at the expense of your soul-crushing standardized tests.
