It is very very sad that you have never been sledding. Even my parents, who grew up in California, used to sled down hills covered in dry grass on bits of cardboard.
Sledding unfortunately is really about standing in the middle of freezing weather and vast amounts of shredded ice, exhausted, bone-weary and sweating (yet with iceblocks for feet). The thrill is great, but then you have to walk back up the hill.
