I'm with you on the occupation. It always seemed to be the most interesting how lives changed, and how people adapted or didn't adapt. WWII gets a lot of press, but WWI was really overwhelming to the people who took part in it, and it's always been intriguing. Alsace is kind of perfect, links to both sides, but little loyalty to either. Just like Emma. (But oh Lord, I have not done enough research for this story.)
